Project Scope: Banksia Park International High School

The Banksia Park International High School Redevelopment was an extensive project which consisted of three site areas spread across the Banksia campus; a 1160m2 new Performing Arts and General Learning Areas (GLAs) building, a major 250m2 refurbishment of Building 6 Teachers Prep and Year 7 GLAs, as well as a 1400m2 Play Court rejuvenation with a new Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA). Works also included new hardstand areas, various ramps, stairs and landscaping across the sloping site. The project was highlighted by the extensive feature timberwork throughout the Performing Arts space, and also featured aesthetic roof profiles and cladding mixes.

“Built during the peak of COVID, in an occupied school environment with complex access across the sites created a number of serious challenges throughout the project. Temporary access roads were created and reinstated upon completion, with deliveries coordinated around school drop-off and pick-up times. Constant OH&S changes were made in line with COVID requirements, and material delays requiring reselection and resequencing of works in short turnarounds.
Adding to the challenges faced, early onsite investigations discovered that the soil onsite was contaminated with asbestos resulting in removal and remediation of 1100 tonnes of contamination removed on weekends in line with Education requirements.
The school arranged a significant amount of extra works during the project including a $130k upgrade of the existing security system for the site, the addition of a separate $280k refurbishment of the Music and Drama Rooms on the opposite side of Building 6, as well as an extra $910k to completely replace the two existing playcourts with four new courts including new sports equipment.
The project unfolded as a dynamic journey, marked by our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to unforeseen circumstances. Banksia Park showcased Mykra’s technical proficiency but also highlighted our commitment to client satisfaction and the creation of aesthetically pleasing spaces.”
